Foreign bodies: Where did you come from? Expected and unexpected findings in the abdominal cavity

Introdução e objetivo(s)

There are various causes for finding foreign bodies in patients, ranging from procedural materials to psychiatric disorders. It is of utmost importance that the radiologist identifies such findings and, whenever possible, determines the origin of the foreign body, which can be clinically significant (such as a battery, for example). The aim of this study is to illustrate, through clinical cases, how various imaging methods are crucial in the detection and evaluation of foreign bodies in the abdominal cavity.

Método(s)

Through a pictorial study, comprised of clinical cases encompassing patient history and radiological images, we will demonstrate how imaging methods play a pivotal role from diagnosis to the evaluation of complications related to foreign bodies in the human body (both expected and unexpected).

Discussão

In cases of clinical-surgical procedures, materials positioned in patients must serve a purpose, such as drainage, anastomosis, vascular closure, or contraception methods, for example. It is of utmost importance to recognize through imaging methods whether such devices are indeed fulfilling their designated functions.
Despite having therapeutic purposes, clinical-surgical devices remain foreign bodies to our bodies. Therefore, reactions can occur. This scenario can be harmful to the patient, potentially costing their life. Thus, it is crucial to identify through imaging methods whether such devices are truly fulfilling their designated functions.

Conclusões

The accuracy of the assessment is crucial for the clinical management of the patient, preventing incorrect diagnoses and minimizing radiation exposure, thereby contributing to hospital cost-effectiveness.
