Revisiting voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) and retrograde urethrogram (RUG)

Introdução e objetivo(s)

This pictorial study has the objective to review, describe and illustrate examination techniques and findings of Voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) and retrograde urethrogram (RUG) that cannot go unnoticed in our reports.

Método(s)

We selected images of cases of our service that can raise suspicions or confirm diseases. We separated them according to the anatomy (bladder and urethra), gender (only males) and age group (children or adults). The pathologies we will explore are: urethral stricture, spongiofibrosis, megalourethra, ureteral calculus, posterior urethral valve, vesicoureteral reflux, neurogenic bladder, Marion's disease, retroureteral fístula, benign prostatic hyperplasia and post surgical findings. The quick and right diagnosis can be crucial in the treatment of our patients.

Discussão

The voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) and retrograde urethrogram (RUG) are fluoroscopy exams performed by radiologists. It is necessary to use iodinated contrast and X-Ray machines to perform the exam. The indications can vary according to the gender, age and clinical history. The main findings in men can be divided between congenital (posterior and anterior urethral valves and duplicated urethra) and acquired lesions of the urethra (benign prostatic hypertrophy and diverticula). VCUG and RUG are complementary exams of urethroscopy, since they can detect pathologies that were not visible. Other exams can provide adjunct informations, such as sonography and MRI.

Conclusões

Despite advances in imaging methods, voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) and retrograde urethrogram (RUG) remains an important examination for the diagnosis of certain pathologies
